Savvy Cyber Kids exists to enable youth, families and school communities to be empowered by technology. We believe that the adults in young people’s lives have a responsibility to guide young people with a comprehensive cyber safety and cyber ethics education. After all, today’s youth are growing up in a world that encourages a deep involvement with technology, where they can very easily make bad and potentially dangerous decisions.
Children are taught vital safety lessons from the youngest of ages, like ‘look both ways before you cross the street,’ ‘don’t talk to strangers,’ and the ‘golden rule’—lessons that become automatic behaviors (we hope) as our children get older. Cyber safety and cyber ethics lessons are no different. Parents and caregivers need to start having ‘The Tech Talk’ with children at the youngest of ages. As soon as children are holding a screen, they can be taught personal internet safety lessons like protecting personal information and understanding who are strangers in the online world (anyone they don’t know first in real life). Once ‘The Tech Talk” starts, it never stops!
October is National Cyber Security Awareness Month and as parents and teachers, you know that your kids are online and connected to their virtual worlds like never before.
You can help keep kids safe online!
Volunteer with Savvy Cyber Kids and be a CyberHERO! Savvy Cyber Kids’ Volunteer Programs brings volunteers into the schools to help young children learn about personal internet safety, bully response, technology balance, digital reputation and privacy. The volunteers help the children learn how to remain safe and be empowered to make appropriate decisions in their online worlds. As a Savvy Cyber Kids volunteer, you can help us reach more schools and teach children about how to stay safe online. We presently offer two volunteer opportunities: reading the Savvy Cyber Kids picture books and leading classroom activities for Pre-K through 2nd grade classrooms ; and leading classroom and assembly Savvy Cyber Kids presentations for 3rd through 5th grades.
